چکیده

A patent pending, energy based, method is presented for controlling a haptic interface system to ensure stable contact under a wide variety of operating conditions. System stability is analyzed in terms of the time domain definition of passivity. We define a "Passivity Observer" (PO) which measures energy flow in and out of one or more subsystems in real-time software. Active behavior is indicated by a negative value of the PO at any time. We also define the "Passivity Controller" (PC), an adaptive dissipative element which, at each time sample, absorbs exactly the net energy output (if any) measured by the PO. The method is tested with simulation and implementation in the "Excalibur" haptic interface system. Totally stable operation was achieved under conditions such as stiffness > 100 N/mm or time delays of 15ms. The PO/PC method requires very little additional computation and does not require a dynamical model to be identified.

Passivity of a class of sampled-data systems: Application to haptic interfaces

Passivity of systems comprising a continuous time plant and discrete time controller is considered. This topic is motivated by stability considerations arising in the control of robots and force-reflecting human interfaces (‘‘haptic interfaces’’). Necessary conditions for passivity are found via a small gain condition, and sufficient conditions are found via an application of Parseval’s theorem...

Testing Time Domain Passivity Control of Haptic Enabled Systems

Much recent work has studied the means of achieving stable yet high performance control of haptic interfaces. Such interfaces provide compelling force feedback in virtual reality simulations for medical training, advanced computer aided design (CAD), entertainment, and other applications. This paper reports experimental testing of a new method of stable haptic interface control, the Passivity O...

Time Domain Passivity Control for Multi-Degree of Freedom Haptic Systems with Time Delay

This paper generalizes the Time Domain Passivity Control concept originally introduced by J.-H. Ryu et al. (2004) in order to work for multi-degree of freedom (DoF) haptic systems with time delay. Its energy computation (named passivity observer) factors in the phase shift caused by time delay, and is improved by an energy estimation. Moreover, the variable damping of the passivity controller i...

Stable Kinematic Teleoperation of Wheeled Mobile Robots with Slippage using Time-Domain Passivity Control

Wheel slippage creates control challenges for wheeled mobile robots (WMR). This paper proposes a new method for haptic teleoperation control of a WMR with longitudinal slippage by using the time-domain passivity control (TDPC) approach. We show the potential nonpassivity for the environment termination caused by the slippage dynamics. The utilized TDPC approach maintains the passivity of teleop...

Time Domain Passivity Control for Position-Position Teleoperation Architectures

This article presents a method for passivating the communication channel of a symmetric position-position teleoperation architecture on the time domain. The time domain passivity control approach has recently gained appeal in the context of timedelayed teleoperation because passivity is not established as a design constraint, which often forces conservative rules, but rather as a property which...
